There are five broad values that underpin all that Fusion is and does. It is from these core values we derive our response to specific questions as they arise.
Justice
Justice is the recognition of the boundaries that are an integral part of all aspects of life. Boundaries matter There is an order to the universe that is not an abstract concept but a reality that we must face in all aspects of our life. Whether it be the environment, our souls or interpersonal relationships there is a real consequence whenever these boundaries are broken.
When we step over the line of what we know to be right, it can often be the consequences on our own psyche that cause the most damage, however when we fail to recognise appropriate boundaries in interpersonal relationships then we start to see people in terms of how they impact on us rather than as individuals in their own right.
It has been said that abuse is when I use you to meet your needs without taking your highest interests into consideration.
Fusion is committed to work for justice at all levels, whether it be in advocacy with governments or simply how we treat each other in our regular relationships.
Mercy
Mercy is the capacity to see life from the perspective of another. An old American Indian saying goes “You cannot judge a man until you have walked a mile in his moccasins”. The Hebrew word for mercy most literally means “seeing the world through another persons eyes”.
Mal Garvin sometimes asks “If you were to write on a list the names of people who actually know what life is like from the inside, how long would that list be?” This question measures the level at which you are currently experiencing community, or to put it another way, it measures to what extent you are benefiting from the Mercy of others.
Fusion is committed to help people see each other, whether it be helping churches better see and understand their communities, helping parents see their children or simply helping Fusion team members create an environment where every person is seen and valued for who they are.
Compassion
Compassion is moving past our own self absorption to love and care for others and the world around us.
Fusion never wants to become a “service provider” in the sense where we see each person impersonally as clients who access our services.
We want every person who comes in contact with Fusion to know they are genuinely valued.
The old book tells us to “rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn”. Fusion people care.
It is as a result of this value that you will occasionally hear us refer to ourselves as a “community of care”.
Respect
Respect is the recognition that every person has priceless value, and all have a gift that we are only able to receive when we see them as separate and unique individuals.
Fusion believes that people are created to live in community, but that we can only really experience community when our individuality is recognised and respected.
Fusion will want to work against “de-humanising” forces whether they be in society generally, educational systems or in the way we treat each other.
Industry
Industry is the recognition that we all have a contribution to make to society, and we will only be fully alive as we are free to exercise our unique gifts productively.
We believe it is fundamental to who we are as human beings to be meaningfully productive. As a result we have a particular focus on Vocational Rehabilitation, and working in communities to help every person engage in productive work.
At the level of the Fusion team this value means that we work to ensure each team member is given a real and meaningful role which helps the whole team move towards their goals.
